The Dark Moon

⛦ What the Dark Moon is and how to harness its energy ⛦

Modern astronomy observes the New Moon as the day that the moon is at 0% illumination. This is marked as the exact point when a new moon cycle begins, ie. the New Moon. The calendars of today follow this and what is marked on most calendars as the New Moon is the time when the moon is at 0% illumination.

However, when the moon is at 0% illumination, this is still technically, the Dark Moon phase, as the New Moon phase actually begins when the moon shows us her very first, teeniest sliver of illumination.

The Dark Moon and the New Moon are two very different parts of the moon cycle with slightly different energies that support us in our needs for introspection and growth.

The New Moon occurs at the moment the moon receives exactly 0% illumination and will begin waxing (growing) again but until the moon is illuminated again, we are in the dark moon phase of the moon cycle. This phase can last 1 to 3 days up to and including the 0% illumination of the New Moon, depending on your location in the world.

The Dark Moon is a very important part of the moon cycle and is often forgotten. It marks the end of the previous moon cycle, where we absorb everything that we have learned and gained during this time. Just like Savasana, also known as corpse pose in Yoga, your body absorbs the practice you have been engaged in. Spending time in this asana helps you to pause and reflect. The experience settles into your mind, body and spirit. It is where we heal, soothe and surrender and where the real growth and the magic inside of you happens.

When was the last time you paused to reflect on something you've completed before moving onto the next thing? Always moving forward on your 'to do list' or concentrating on what you have got to do next!

A great way to observe and utilise the energy of the Dark Moon is to do some soul searching. Put pen to paper and journal the lessons you have learned and what you can bring forward into the next moon's cycle. It can be a wonderfully rewarding experience, outlining for you where your strengths and weaknesses lie, creating a map of where you've been and where your path is now taking you and how you can harness the moon's energy to maximise your growth and spiritual journey.

Ask yourself:

⛦ What experiences, (good or bad) did you have this month?

⛦ What are your 'wins' of the month, what have you achieved or completed?

⛦ What challenges have you faced and what have you learnt from them?

⛦ What things have you struggled with and what you are doing to overcome them?

⛦ What lessons did you learn and what wisdom from them are you bring forward into next month?

Release it all out of your head and onto paper.

On the day before the New Moon, harness the energy of the Dark Moon and pause to reflect on where your journey is taking you.
